Five Reasons Buffy The Vampire Slayer Is the Best TV Series

1. The 1990’s:

Look at that short skirt: 90’s product material. No complaint here.

This isn’t a “time-less” show, in the essence that it isn’t marked by terrible fashion and bad special effects. But when you’re a fan, this is only another characteristic to adore.

The TV screams that it was made during the 1990’s by the obscenely short skirts, the hair bangs, and often fluffy sweaters. I don’t think there are any complaints coming from the male audience that the female characters were wearing short skirts –  but when it comes to making a TV show, maybe Joss Whedon (creater & writer) should have considered toning down the style. Making their clothing a bit more neutral to popular trends at the time might have encouraged more current generations to find continued interest in the show.

Angel, why is your face so squiggly? A vampire possessed by another demon happens everyday at my high school too.

There’s also the terrible special effects. They make me laugh, and I adore the fact that they were doing all that they can do. This one picture of Angel makes it utterly confusing, out of context, just by looking at it. You only know what’s happening to him because Angel is a vampire. You watch some kind of demonic spirit attempt to possess him, and these bad special effects is the response. To the new fans willing to watch it: Just learn to find it endearing.

2.Vampires:

“You have fruit-punch mouth”

This was at one time, the only show about vampires on television. Way back before Twilight, Vampire Diaries, and other poorly written Drama, BTVS was on at Tuesdays at 8pm starting in 1993.

The vampires don’t have false pretenses of acting as vegetarians (Angel is a different story). They are strong and scary. They want to eat you. They die if you poke them in the heart with a stick. The simplicity of these vampires warms my heart.

3. Buffy Anne Summers:

Blond hair, high heels, and a stake in her hand: That’s my kind of girl

The only chosen one, the vampire slayer. Joss Whedon is the most awesome feminist I know of. Why? Because he got sick of the horror movie where the pretty girl gets attacked, and is unable to defend herself. He saw that poor cheerleader walking in the alley and felt pity for her. Something had to change.

So, he created Buffy as a way of saying F-You to the modern horror movie. Not only is she have the physical strength of a god, but she is also an intelligent and emotionally capable woman. The men on the show even find this about her attractive. An independent woman with strength? Oh my! Wait, I think I like this.

4. Willow Rosenberg:

“Chemistry is easy. It’s a lot like witchcraft, only less newt.”

One of Buffy’s best friend’s (aside from Xander) is Willow. Cute, adorable, innocent Willow Rosenberg. She’s the nerd of the high school. She dresses in ugly, frizzy sweaters and wears a teddy-bear backpack to school. And she doesn’t stay innocent forever.

Her character growth is inspirational to youth out there. Why? Because Willow is a lesbian. This wasn’t common dialogue on television in the 90’s but Whedon put it out there. We all, as fans, root for her happiness and cry with her throughout the seasons.

5. Hilarity:

There are the infamous Buffy-isms that come from the show’s own sense of humor. The sometimes snarky, often sarcastic dialogues create a unique quality to the writing.

Willow: “That’s me as a vampire? I’m so evil, and skanky… and I think I’m kinda gay.”

Buffy- “Cordelia…your mouth is open, sound is coming out. This is never good.”
